Snake plant care is easier than most houseplants if you do not treat it like a thirsty tropical. It stores water in leaves and rhizomes. Chronically wet soil kills it faster than a missed watering.
How Much Light Does a Snake Plant Need?
Bright indirect light gives the best color and growth. Unlike monstera, it can keep its shape farther from a window. A south window behind a sheer curtain is ideal. Hot midday sun can bleach leaf edges.
In a hallway it grows slowly but usually lives. That is shade tolerance, not a love of darkness. If shade is all you have, park it with low light houseplants and do not expect fast pups. Window direction is in the light guide.
Water Less, Then Water Deeply
Water when several centimeters of mix are dry, until it drains, then empty the saucer. Near a bright window in summer that may be every 10–14 days; in winter every 3–4 weeks. A rigid weekly calendar is risky.
Mushy, folding, spotted leaves on wet soil mean the rhizome is rotting. Stop watering, unpot, and cut away black smelly tissue. Confirm real thirst with the watering guide, not wrinkles alone.
Soil and Pot

Yellow or Wrinkled Leaves
Yellowing from the base with soft tissue is almost always overwatering. Wrinkles on dry mix can be true drought—water deeply and wait. Split symptoms with brown tips and yellow leaves.
Propagate From Pups
Dividing a pup with rhizome in the growing season is the reliable method. Leaf cuttings in water may root but can lose variegation or rot. Let the rhizome wound dry for a few hours, then pot in barely moist mix.
Pets and Fertilizer
Not pet-safe if chewed. Use pet-safe plants or a high shelf. It is beginner-friendly but not pet-friendly; the starter list is beginner houseplants.
